Bacteriological quality of poultry meat from local markets of Jammu city

Abstract

Thirty poultry meat samples collected from different locations in Jammu city were analysed to determine the bacteriological quality. The mean counts of Standard plate count (SPC), Coliform count (CC), Staphylococcus aureus count (SAC) and Enterococcus faecalis count (EFC) were found to be 6.59±0.13, 4.87±0.19, 3.79±0.07 and 3.88±0.81 log10cfu/gm, respectively. The analysis of variance indicated that all 10 locations of Jammu city differed significantly for SPC and EFC except CC and SAC. In conclusion, the microbiological quality of meat in Jammu city is not satisfactory. Therefore, it is suggested that raw meat should be handled with appropriate hygienic measures and continuous microbial monitoring to safeguard the health of consumers.
